Creative on the rise!
Introducing the amazing Sophie!
Sophie is an exceptionally talented and gifted poet with remarkable passion and determination to make impactful strides in the world through her craft and this is very obvious in her zeal and her achievements in the world of Literature, specifically poetry speaks for itself.
Today, we take a journey into the world of Sophie with excerpts below chronicling her incredible story
"Hi, my name is Sophie June. In 7th grade English class, a wonderful teacher of mine, Ms. Pike, had us analyze poetry from a book called "Good Poems" by Garrison Keillor. I loved looking for meaning in abstract words, whether they had historical or personal implications about the author's life. This quickly became my favorite class.
Ms. Pike would read a poem every day, and have us write down any 1-3 word combinations that struck us. As we collected "cool words", she had us create our own poems using a combination of these notes and our own ideas. Viola! She was amazing for this method of spurring inspiration into every child, whether or not they were all naturally poetic. Through this I discovered I was, indeed, a poetically-minded girl. I started writing on my own and never stopped. It's been 15 years since.
What inspires my writing? Everything - personalities, relationships, seasons, spirituality, nature, intimacy, gratitude, the human condition. It helps that I'm sensitive. I feel every high and low profoundly. I try to draw meaningful lessons from most experiences. I see sensitivity as a power and blessing.
I was recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 27 years old, which has also brought about a host of new emotions and lessons to write about. It has grown me as a person.
I'm from the beautiful Pacific Northwest, where there are defined seasons with differing amounts of daylight and varied weather. My writing has always taken on a seasonal pattern. In the dark winters, I do typically feel a bit more blue, but I channel this in poems, expressing the depths of that darkness and what it teaches me. In the spring and summer I tend to feel surges of personal growth following the reflective 'hibernation' of winter, and this also comes out in my writing. I often specifically express themes around cycles and seasons within a single poem.
Aside from writing, I adore fashion - I make jewelry and clothing and love to 'upcycle' thrifted pieces. I have a fashion page as well, where I showcase my styling obsession. I'm a certified Life Coach with a bachelor's in Psychology, and briefly worked as a matchmaker. I currently work in HR for a nonprofit. I'm fascinated by the way humans interact on all levels, and how emotional intimacy presents itself or sometimes hides away in our world - also themes you'll see in my poetry.
I want to end this with a note that I'm incredibly grateful for Ms. Pike, who actively nourished my proclivity towards poetry and made sure I saw my own abilities and interest. The adult figures who support us like that, when we're children, truly make a difference in our self-concept and therefore in what we continue to pursue and what we don't. That is a delicate, but real, truth."
