Introducing Tori!
Tori is an exceptionally talented and gifted poet, with remarkable passion and determination to make impactful strides in the world through her craft and this is very obvious in her zeal and her consistency in the world of Literature, specifically poetry speaks for itself. Her relatable and aesthetic style of writing is exactly why Tori is now here on the most prestigious Poetry platform in the world.
Today, we take a foray into the world of Tori with excerpts below detailing her awesome story.
"I write under the pen name “Poetry Awkward,” but most people know me by my nickname, Tori. The reason I use Poetry Awkward, to put it simply, is that I am awkward. Back in 2019, when I created my poetry page, I thought everything I wrote was juvenile and precocious, but I still wrote for a purpose. I wanted to make people feel by lifting people through poetry. I loved the idea of making people feel that they were seen and heard. At one point, someone told me they printed off all my poetry and taped it onto their wall. Every morning they would read my poems and it would inspire them to get out of bed. When I was at my lowest, all I wanted were encouraging words I could relate to - words that could make me feel like I was never truly alone. I was pleased to find that I had been able to do the same for someone else.
My lowest point in my life (like so many of us) was my childhood. That time was not filled with inspirational quotes or anyone who could see my pain through my eyes. All I had was my mother who tried her best to make up for her own mistakes and gave me everything she never had. I would say that is all I ever really needed as she gave me culture, adventures, and taught me it was okay to be a little goofy sometimes. She raised me listening to Tori Amos in our red Volkswagen Rabbit, traveling across the states and even to Europe (which was a very unhinged moment for my mother). It’s where I get my unique point of view from. Goofiness aside, she is resilient, strong, and fierce - she is my savior in life and always will be.
During the moodiest time in my life (a.k.a high school) was when I started writing in journals and on Tumblr. Then my dreams and aspirations expanded. I wanted to be a film director, a playwright, an actress, a novelist - anything that would transport me to another life. While in college and with a lot of healing, I realized that I didn’t want to run from my past but instead write about it.
My adopted father, a man who fixed 27 years in one, is an English professor and a scholar. He introduced me to so many writers, Vonnegut, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and the glorious Christopher Moore. A whole new world had opened for me. Before, I was only inspired to lift people and make them feel seen and now I’m here to do so much more. Not just to move people, but to be unhinged and shock them with words. I am ever evolving like the world my father so graciously taught through open arms, a fountain pen, and a loud and torturous typing style. He pushed me to write narratives and continue to explore the worlds of Twain, Eliot, Plath, Chopin, and Steinbeck. As he says, “narrative is everything – tell a story.” I dedicate everything to him, my inspiration, my creativity, and my words.
Now as a mother myself, my heart is filled with so many emotions that simple words could never suffice. Writing poems is my only outlet to express my desires, my pain, and my desire to change the world around me. I want depserately to change my daughter’s world for the better (however I can) and keep my pen to paper (or screen). If I could be just a small star that helps brighten my daughter’s night sky, I could say that I’ve lived my life well – and that’s the poetry for me.
Tori's ability as a Poet and all round creative of repute is World Class as she was personally recommended by International Bestseller and respected Poet, Joseph Spencer, as in his exact words "Tori is so talented with words and imagery. She has a very bright future ahead of her".
She will feature heavily on the Collab Tour as an Official member of the club to promote her craft as a World class Poet.
Everyone at The Poet's Digest wish Tori the very best in all her endeavours.
