Today, we take a foray into the world of Michael with excerpts below detailing his amazing story.
"I am Michael Meggoe, a self-published author of two books, a poet, a quote writer, a beat maker, a pianist, and an artist (drawing and painting).
I was born and raised in Jamaica where I currently reside. I was born into a Christian family and have retained my Christian faith and traditions to this present day.
By character I am a humble, reserved, and shy person. I love watching and playing football, board games, video games, and movies but I have given up the latter two just to spend more time reading and writing poetry on a professional level.
I remember when my path to becoming a poet started, although I had no idea that I would end up here or that poetry even existed at that time. I was just seven years of age when one day at school I just paused like a moment of epiphany hit me and I became conscious of myself and started to question my existence, ‘Who am I?’, and ‘Why was I created?’, and ‘Why was everything created?’. At that moment I became enthused and curious about life, and asked a lot of ‘whys’ of life and God. I started to observe everything around me, sounds, silence, visual aspects, and smells. I started to hear different and see different. I became mindful.
This led me to abandon relying on teachers and school to invest me with knowledge and I would grab any reading materials I could get my hands and eyes on including labels on items, newspapers, comic books, encyclopedias, and the Bible. My stepfather also had a mini library installed in a corner of our house and I would delve into these books and attempted to read them all off.
I became fascinated with stories, with words and their meaning and their sounds and the way looked on the page. And from that age I would practice writing my own short stories for fun.
It was at that early age too I discovered I loved to draw and observe people, and things around me. I never planned to become a poet but it chose me. As a matter of fact when I was in high school I became fascinated with science, being influenced by my stepfather who though not a scientist himself was obsessed with the sciences and science materials which he would bring home. However in the 9th grade I found the sciences too challenging and it was required of us to choose a career of study.
I sat long and hard and was lost as to what career to pick as the arts was not given much expectations by parents or society on a whole, it was mostly sidelined as a hobby. But then I decided to just take the chance and I signed up for the arts.
So from there I ventured more into the arts world, embracing it and it was perhaps during that time I started to explore other forms of writing including songwriting, lyrics which at the time I didn’t know was poetry until others who viewed them told me I was lyrical and poetic, and one of my teachers would point out to me that I could write but I thought at that time that she meant I just wrote voluminously.
I think the most defining point for me as a poet came in the year 2012 when I enrolled at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. It was a college dedicated and centered solely on the arts, and although I was studying music theory I got exposed to the other art forms offered at the college. There I felt a sense of belonging I have never felt in my life before, just being among people who were all artists was different from being out in the world. It was at that time I started to read and explore more poems online and found myself penning more poems at will and saw my poetry improving.
To me poetry is the most beautiful, and intense, and unlimited, and expressive art form and the most challenging. And that inspires me to keep writing poems along with my passion, and obsession for poetry.
I love writing, I love the smell of pen ink, and the sound of a page turning. It is a world of its own.
I love words, and how they sound when strung together in rhythmic patterns.
My high creative energy is also a driving force that keeps me writing poems, as I am always thinking up innovative ideas. My creative mind never sleeps. My obsession with creating imagery, metaphors, and similes is also a factor that keeps me writing poems.
I write more than I talk and poetry provides that outlet and gives me a voice.
My confidence in my writing abilities also keeps me writing, and my dream of becoming a full time poet as well."
