Introducing Femke!

Femke is an outstandingly talented and gifted poet, with remarkable passion and determination to make impactful strides in the world through her craft and this is very obvious in her zeal and her consistency in the world of Literature, specifically poetry speaks for itself. Her relatable and aesthetic style of writing is exactly why Femke is now here on the most prestigious Poetry platform in the world. 

Today, we take a foray into the world of Femke with excerpts below detailing her brilliant story. 

My name is Femke, and I’m from Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Due to my father’s work for an American company, I also lived in Belgium and in Austria for some years. I have a natural knack for languages, love nature, talk to animals and love singing. As for my background… on the credit side the love for reading, music, history and social etiquette, on the debit side verbal and physical abuse, emotional neglect and bullying. Due to the disturbing situation at home I quit school at 16. Got a nice office job, thanks to my knowledge of English and German and worked myself up to being a successful credit manager. 

I met my husband when I was just 17. We married 8 years later and marriage certainly wasn’t always a bed of roses, but we’re still together, with a beautiful daughter who will turn 21 this year. 

I’ve always loved poetry, but was initially only acquainted with the works of Dutch writers of course, and from my years in Austria I knew some works of Wilhelm Busch. Agatha Christie’s books introduced me to Shakespeare, Kipling and Flecker to name just a few. I started collecting poetry books of all the great names and my bookcase is my pride and joy! 

As to writing… that started in 2013. Being a ‘stay at home’ mom, I had too much time on my hands. We got ourselves a dog, I took French lessons, but still I felt bored, dissatisfied and also lonely. Moreover, I had too much time to think and with no one to talk to, I started entrusting my thoughts to paper. I chose to write in English to keep some emotional distance. 

I spent a lot of time on FaceBook in those days and came across this poetry page, where I sent one of my scribbles and they liked and shared it! Soon after that I made my own page and that went down surprisingly well. I wrote most of my work between 2013 and 2017. Lost my inspiration due to some new challenges in life, and only this year I gave it another try on Instagram. 

I don’t consider myself a writer yet, let alone a poet, but I know how to weave my thoughts and feelings into metaphors and lines that rhyme, so I guess you could say I endeavour to write lyrical and narrative poetry.

I am grateful beyond words to the community on Instagram. They introduced me to different poetry forms and genres and their ongoing support boosted my confidence in a big way! Writing helped me to close the book on some parts of my life, to find emotional balance and it satisfies my intellect.

I look very much forward to continue this exciting new journey! And maybe, along the way, I’ll be able to inspire others too.
