Today, we take a foray into the world of James Dolan with excerpts below detailing his amazing story.
"I didn’t grow up thinking I’d become a writer. In the world I come from, stories weren’t written down — they were lived, spoken, sung, argued over, and passed from one generation to the next. My Romany heritage taught me early that memory is a kind of inheritance, and language is how we protect it. I grew up surrounded by people whose lives were full of grit, humour, struggle, and beauty, and even before I had the words for it, I understood that every moment carried a story.
Writing didn’t arrive in my life as a career plan. It arrived as a survival instinct. When life got heavy, I wrote. When life got beautiful, I wrote. When I didn’t know how to speak something aloud, I wrote. Poetry became the place where I could tell the truth without interruption — a place where I could honour the people who raised me, the streets that shaped me, and the moments that made me. It was never about being clever or impressive. It was about being honest.
I started sharing my work quietly at first, almost reluctantly. I didn’t expect anyone to connect with it. But something happened that surprised me: people recognised themselves in the lines. They felt the pulse of real life in the rhythm. They heard the echoes of their own families, their own losses, their own resilience. That connection changed everything. It showed me that poetry wasn’t just a private refuge — it was a bridge.
My debut collection, A Rose in a Mist, grew out of that realisation. It wasn’t written to chase trends or algorithms. It was written to honour where I come from and who I’ve become. The book is built from lived experience — family, heritage, grief, humour, and the strange beauty of growing up between worlds. It’s a tribute to the people who shaped me: my parents, my grandfather, my community, and the culture that taught me to see the extraordinary in the ordinary.
Poetry, for me, is not a hobby or a pastime. It’s a craft. It’s a discipline. It’s the way I make sense of the world and give something back to it. It’s how I turn memory into something that can outlive me. It’s how I honour the voices that came before mine and create space for the voices that will come after. Poetry is the thread that ties my past to my future, and the place where I feel most myself.
I write with the same principles I live by - show up, work hard, stay authentic, and never cut corners. I take my work seriously because it comes from serious places — from family history, from lived truth, from the desire to build something that lasts. I’m proud of the life I’ve lived, the lessons I’ve learned, and the stories I carry. And I’m proud to share them now, not as someone trying to be a poet, but as someone who has become one through experience, discipline, and heart.
As I continue this journey, my aim is simple: to write work that resonates, that honours my heritage, and that speaks to anyone who has ever felt caught between worlds. Poetry gave me a way to rise. Now I write so others can rise with me."
