Hamann has spent his life moving between different worlds: science and the wilderness of the Sierra Nevada on one hand and traditional lyrical poetry on the other. Rather than keeping experiences separate, he has built a body of work that brings them together in surprising and deeply human ways.
Born in San Jose, California, in 1972 and raised near Lake Tahoe, Hamann developed an early love of mountains, storytelling, and the natural world. The landscapes of the American West continue to shape his writing, providing both setting and subject matter for many of his books.
Before becoming a full-time writer, Hamann served in the Army as a laboratory technologist, helping run blood banks during Desert Storm. Following his military service, he earned a degree in Molecular Biology from the University of Providence in Great Falls, Montana.
Hamann's poetry often explores change, memory, loss, resilience, and discovery. Scientific observation and literary reflection often share the same page, creating a style that is both analytical and personal.
His debut collection, “Six Years in Service,” examines military life through the lens of personal transformation, setting up a common theme throughout his work. In “Songs for Sefe,” he turns to the life and loves of poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, using a sequence of sonnets to explore art, devotion, and loss.
